Well this time of year I get as excited as the children. Clothes, and especially the goodies I found on TpT this time. I'm very excited to use my purchases.

It's time to shop, so any reason to grab a new bag, dress, or shoe has to be great. My only dilemma now is that I still have post baby weight five weeks after of course. So what is a young mommy/teacher to do. I shopped :-). Unfortunately shopping these days in the department store and having to stop and nurse is something I haven't gotten use to yet honestly. I feel more comfortable at home, so its always a drive by shopping run.

I did manage to shop online of course for the classroom (WAY BEYOND WHAT THEY GIVE), myself and the children. WOW the children!!!! I'm still getting used to having two daughters. I must confess - on my nephew's birthday card yesterday I forgot to sign my LO's name. :-( Yet I don't forget to add anything in the cart for her.

I managed to order things from Macy's, Kohl's, The Limited, and The Gap and Old Navy for the girls. ( The Gap for me too) Of course I found wonderful sale items however I wonder what else is better out there in cyberspace! I may be done for now; however I would love to hear from you.

Where do you find your items for school? What online stores?

Hello to all reading this post. I know I have been gone for a while so much to do, and not enough time to blog. Well for starters...

I am a new mommy to a beautiful keep me busy and up all night 2 weeks and 6 days old little girl!!!! YAY! This in itself is busy you moms out there know. Before I could blog because I felt uncomfortable everywhere I sat, just dog on miserable; and now I cant get a minute to myself to read email. So I hope I can at least blog a couple times a week.

School is approaching I still have a couple of weeks, and the bad thing is that I haven't been as mobile, so I am doing a lot of shopping online. I love to shop online- but let's see how this goes. I'd rather find the deals in the store. Oh how I loved and enjoyed store hopping and grabbing deals and sales; now when I sneak out I am trying to hurry up before the baby awakens from her nap because my lovely GUY can't feed her. That will become another task weaning her off maybe before school returns.

Hey Blogger Buddies!

I have been a very bad blogger lately. I am fairly new to this, and I thought by now that I would have it under my wing; however the time has gotten the best of me.

For the last 3 weeks I have been swamped with classroom housekeeping, professional development, and lets not forget motherhood. My daughter is three and I still feel sleep deprived at times. We moms wear so many hats, and add the teacher's hat you become a mom instantly to many others.

Then earlier this week Sandy hit my area. We are OK thankfully, yet many have flooded basements, streets, and homes. Transportation is to a minimum. This is one time that I am glad that I drive in this city. Then school had been out for the last three days and for the next two. So I am on an unplanned vacation and I left the building without any work barely.

I will really work harder from now on to do better. I love my new blog I thought that would definitely make me stay tuned, but I fell off bad. I haven't even blogger stalked how I use to. Well luckily I have been doing a bit of creating. My little girl turns 4 soon, and that had honestly taken much of my time. Minnie Mouse themed party here we go!!!!!! I will be pulling my hair out soon.

I have been preparing a 5th grade math task card bundle.

Question: How many math tasks do you have your class complete within one math block or workshop?

This wss a better Monday, and we began week 5 off with a great start. Tomorrow we have testing (not state) just a post test and a pre test for Math. At the beginning of each topic we give a pre test , and then after the topic has been taught the post test is given. We're ending Decimals, and beginning Multiplying Whole Numbers.

It's a headached but we can see the pattern of errors early and where the student is not meeting standard. So tomorrow will be a very long and boring math day. I will be actively watching the students, and finishing charts that I began earlier today. Thanks to the Ginger Snaps , those anchor chart ideas were great and refreshing.

The link is above.

This weeks foci will be on the new common core instructional shifts in mathematics- FOCUS, COHERENCY, FLUENCY, DEEPER UNDERSTANDING, APPLICATION, and DUAL INTENSITY. I will post about these shifts later on this week; however I love how the state puts a new name to what have already done in the classroom for years. :-)

I had an early wardrobe malfunction. I wore the wrong pants that I forgot to get hemmed. Now I will definitely have to get the tailored.

Assessment assessments and more assessments! I love assessing my students however sometimes I feel like enough is enough, and I want to TEACH already. This put me in a real funk, but 12:00pm. To top it off my students are slacking on homework and I don't understand. It is the beginning of the year. Come one already. I am a homework teacher. I believe in reinforcement, and that you can work to your potential- if you try. Some of my struggling students are not completing their homework and it is frustrating me. We sit and conference, in small group, and during extended day; which is an extra 37.5 minutes. Yeah I said 37.5 minutes its a whole contractual thing lol.

I don't even overload them. I think their still in summer mode. WAKE UP I say it is almost October, and 2013 will be here in no time. UGH I was annoyed I didn't give them their grades from their test on Friday either. I told them if they didn't do their homework why should I share my homework with them. Of course I will give them their scores, but I want my work without any excuses.

So tomorrow is another day, and I'm hoping that our rounding decimals lesson runs smoothly. I have a ppt prepared (I am going to convert it to a prezi soon), differentiated small group instruction with a smile. Some of my lovely have to finish publishing their 5th grade goals from yesterday's post.

Here is a level tasked that I created for rounding decimals. I am going to use it during small group instruction tomorrow, then later put it in a folder for a center.

Every year I ask my student to write long term and short term goals for the new school year. I have had to come up with clever and creative ways to present it because I have been getting bored with it myself. The good thing about this assignment is that we can look back at their September goals and see that most of the goals, if not all were met before April.

Some of my student set goals that are interesting and amusing (not elementary at all :-))and when I read them I just chuckle. Some I become dazed with after reading- The SHADES of TEACHING, it comes in all hues lol.

Here is the publishing paper that was used this year. My program has a great image of loose leaf paper. I thought is was retro and cute at the same time with the added touches that I made to a blank canvas.

They look great displayed and backed with neon paper.

My students in the past loved The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and it seems like my new students enjoy Jeff Kinney as well. Here is my ode to JK. I got the idea from Sarah at Everybody is a Genius. She is an interactive notebook wiz, and there is an assignment that she had her students do as a way of decor yet creativity with numbers. I tweaked it a little of course. The purpose is to think about numbers in a different way, how do you use numbers daily, or the numbers about you. They wrote on their notebook similarly to a cover. I immediately had an idea how to use it when I read the post from Sarah. I can't find the actual post- it was during the summer. When I find it I will post it then.

I gave my students a huge number five on paper, and they were to think of creative ways to write number about them. They loved it, and I enjoyed reading them! We are going to have a publishing showcase this Friday. Here it is, it will be available at my TN store.

I have been so busy in the classroom as many of you this time of year I know. I haven't had the energy to blog- not even stalk! I seem to have a sudden case of narcolepsy when I walk through the door, then I remember that I have a toddler that I have to entertain, feed, bathe, and put to bed. WOW how I miss my summer vacation already.

I hope to get back in many sort of new routine soon. My new classes are great. I have to great 5th grade classes, and one with 16 students and one with 18 students. We have begun our routines and now I am grading baseline assessments. I love this part. It is amazing to see the progress throughout the year after these initial assessments. So far my teacher eye have already spotted my helpers, doers, and need to pushers. Back to School Night is this Thursday; which I think is backwards. One day we will get it together and meet before the year if its agreed upon.

I have made an attempt to take picture daily, in hopes of having a great yearbook at the end of the school year and I have seen some talk about Pic 180!!!!

See you around, I hope all is well in the blogger world. I can't wait to sit down and read blogs that I adore during my 2 days off.Shades of Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10919827366523860333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-342008878840813925.post-83403906809935898522012-09-03T18:41:00.000-07:002012-09-03T18:41:07.943-07:00Dear Summer, Dear Summer,

It's been real!! I had a great time, relaxing and enjoying my little girl. Now my respite is over, and it's time to enter the school house for REAL in the morning. PD's and Pleasantries!!!!

I hope this school year ends up being just as successful as the years before. I intend to teach my heart out, and make great friends and memories. Yeah work hard too, have I implied that yet?

So it's almost time to say toodles to you. I will enjoy this rest of your days, although the chills on my arms today told me otherwise.

P.S thanks for the extra time and head start; which allowed me to be- just about finished in my classroom? ;-)

Until Next Summer
As I anticipated going into school this morning I was so lucky to have a strange dream. There was a staff wide pop quiz; which sort of looked like a cabinet meeting of 8 to me. The quiz was on MATH COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS!!!!!! So what does this mean? I am thinking that someone is going to ask me a lovely question and I am going to have a brain fart moment. I will have to read these standards again and again, and also walk around with a cheat sheet. I dislike being caught out there.

Fortunately it was just a dream, and I was off to the school house about noon today. So here is what I turned my key to see.

The front of my room. My lovely chalkboard that I don't use. I can't wait to cover it up as I usually do. I wish they would install dry erase. I'm thinking about the shower board DIY idea. I just don't know about transporting it to my school. My desk is in the middle of the room. I had to wait for the custodians to move it to its location.
The back corner of my room.

I am very exciting to share this my teacher's week linky. I am linking up with Blob Hoppin', and enjoying every bit of it. I wasn't able to contribute yesterday, because I haven't been to my classroom as of yet. I don't go in until Monday- I can't wait to get started.

I have been finding great buys still. My sweetest purchase is a Must haves for me which is a refrigerator, and my last one was on its last days. I decided to purchase a replacement.

Late Must haves:
I definitely needed this $64.00! The printer is $29.00 from Walmart right now. I had to order it, and the both arrived today. Copy, Printer, Scanner!

After seeing all the raves about these lovely plan books this summer, I had to order one. I was contemplating for a week. I normally use the free one from Lakeshore, or create my own. However; I decided to splurge a little and treat myself. "Happy Early Teacher Appreciation Day to ME!" My copy is on the way, with all the bells and whistles. I am not telling my sweetie how much I paid for this plan book either shhhhhh!

Well unfortunately I missed yesterday teacher's week portion, but I have a bit to share today. I have been getting my ducks in a row for the new school year like everyone else- I finally received my class list.

One thing that I can live without in my classroom - I know it sounds corny but the Internet! I am very annoyed when I have something planned and I am excited about and they are doing something with the hub, or the server is down. This leaves to the love of my trusty Smartboard. I use my own presentations or download them from the Internet.
I would love for it to be mounted like some of the new models in my building; however I do like the option of rearranging my room the way I like it, and not around the board.

My go to math sites are Pearson Success due to the fact that we use Pearson Envisions Math. The program has great components that are very useful.

As a teacher in the testing grade I use different sites to review concepts such Practice Practice it was great in prior years I reckon they will make changes according to CCSS.

I am very eager this year to use Remind101. This seems amazing and its free.

I am also trying out Xtramath.org - Its a non profit organization dedicated to math achievement for all. You sign up for FREE, then make a class list. It selects children to begin with a limit given, and it even prompts the child to tell the next its his/her turn. Talk about management. I found this surfing/stalking but unfortunately I can't remember where. I would love to thank them if I haven't already. :-).

Question- Any cool birthday treat ideas for fifth graders! Shades of Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10919827366523860333noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-342008878840813925.post-37477792612374279022012-08-15T19:15:00.000-07:002012-08-15T19:15:02.049-07:00A Bit of Departmentalization Housekeeping! So where I teach- the fifth grade classrooms are departmentalized. What does that mean? Well, in my school most of the fifth grade classroom have 2 teachers- a homeroom teacher (me) who teaches either mathematics(me), or literacy.

Yeah, so I teach Math primarily along with the other core subject areas. They travel to their literacy teacher once a day for their literacy block. Which is great too becuae is give them an early start or taste of middle school, more responsiblilty, and many assignments :-).

So by now you must be thinking- so you don't teach literature? Yes and no. Not formally however I do teach literacy through math, science, social studies, and character education (just about everything). At first I was on the fence about moving to the upper grades especially with this system in place, and having someone else teaching my students and test scores and everything. (CRAZY).

I gave it a try last year and I loved it. I plan for my Math Block (1hr 4mins worth), and other areas its great! My classroom is filled with numbers and literacy like any other classroom, but more numbers than anything. My partner teacher's classroom is in close proximity, and it went well. I think it works best with a great partner teach anyway. BELIEVE there was some headache in that building at times. I was lucky.

My main issue as I digress- was TEST SCORES, PROGRESS, AYP!

So I made it my business to make sure that I knew what they were doing in literacy at all times. Skills strategies you name it, howerver when there is a walk through, or when I get observed it is not for lesson in ELA. My students read dailying the the class, hand in reports, take vocabulary & spelling test with me within my class- for my knowledge. If you too have this system within your school it is important to know your students. Know them as a person, reader, mathematician, scientist etc.

A Treat
A couple of years ago when I taught 2nd grade we developed a reading tracking sheet as a grade. I have tweaked it over time, and would like to share it with you. For the love of teachers and for me to remain sane this year as well, I have to know where my students are in terms of reading in order for them to succeed in any subject. Especially since this is going to be my second year teachinf 5th, I'm using what I know AGAIN for the 5th year. If it's not broke don't fix it - I guess. It's my responsibility to teach, and help them learn in any way.

So here it is, it is in my TN shop for free!

Reading tracker from grades 1 -5. Track your students reading levels. If
your school uses these tracking systems this will help you find the correlating
level from book to book as well. I usually highlight their first assessment
with green, second with yellow, and the final assessment with red. If you want
to show their progress in between assessment dates you can always do so.

However no one has read it but me I think. So in retrospect no one but me will read this post as well. I was eager so at first I attempted to post daily, then every two days,then...

There must be something that I am missing!? Someone in the world of bloggers tell me what it is. Well
1. I know that my page needs revamping.
2. I need to pick up blogging for dummies
3. I love teaching and sharing so when I get the hang of it I will be fine.
4. I thought RUSH was unnerving.

OK wish me luck!!!!!Shades of Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10919827366523860333noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-342008878840813925.post-5940511899254674732012-08-06T21:21:00.001-07:002012-08-06T21:21:39.540-07:00Getting Organized -SMWell I am late but I had to do a million and one things of course. I had a fin filled day with my daughter and friends. we went to Chuck E. Cheese, spent time in the pool, then off to create, and make dinner at the same time. Dinner was VERY later tonight! lol

Oh guess what I found a Dollar Tree while I was in Staten Island! Fortunately I didn't miss much and my lovely DEAL$ didn't let me down.

Well today I made/jazzed up my lamp I purchased the other day. I hot glued decorative card stock after using my circle cutter. By the way I am have a hard time getting uniformed circles every time. A little frustrating. I do like the results, yet I think I will add a solid color as well.

I also managed to add decorative card stock to my new file cabinet from Joann Fabric. 52.99 - 50% off. It has the great compartment on the top as well. Its very sturdy, and the color is great. I have crafts, and card stock inside so far. I may keep this one home and get another - who knows.

I am working on a couple of file as I type on I got the idea from Ms. B's Best- Expectations. Great idea, I love this blogging thing. I need to figure out how to add file too. I am going to turn it into a poster/take it to staples to enlarge it. I usually create my rules with my students however this being my second year teaching fifth grade I know that I need this before hand. (second and third grade does well with that activity)
I am enjoying all the finds that I have so far for the upcoming year. My bestie came to visit from Maryland so she took some of my time, I enjoyed every minute. Also being that I am new to blogging, I definitely have to remember to actually blog and not think about it.

I've had so many aversions to the plans this week, I feel like I am in a whirlwind. (lol) however, ever I managed to go to Walmart, Target again, Michael's of course, and my lovely discount store DEAL$. I found a great rug at DEAL$ for $10 and a lamp for $10 (white shade) which I love. A blank canvas. pics soon

Well I had a little change with my material, I am still using Kristen's files, however I have also decided to use some of Ginger Snaps lovely work as well. Thank you for such a great download.
So I have been printing courtesy of STAPLES (lol), cutting, and laminating like a mad woman for two days. I make frequent break due to the three year old princess.

I am loving the NEON Editables from Ginger Snaps. As you can see above this was before all the cutting. Those are the Schedule signs, table markers, and manipulatives signs. I loved how I can edit or choose to do what I like with the various shapes and colors provided. I decided to make the rectangular pieces months of the year. I also created a 2012 & 2013 year sign. Sometimes I forget to so that and end up creating one at the 12th hour. :-)

Thie NEON Binder also from Ginger Snaps turned out great! My Binders are just about ready. Those lovely Common Core State Standards are safely put inside as well.

So, maybe I can take a short breather and watch some more Olympics 2012!!! Michael Phelps, Gaby Douglass, and Ryan Lochte. Wait I can't forget Jeter, and the Jamaican Princess Shelly Thunder!!!!! They ROCK!

Monday Made it, here I come!
I knew that I needed a new needle for my Cricut, and more cardstock. Of course I ended up getting other things I need for my projects before September.

I grabbed black cardstock, hoping that I could use less ink for my flipped circle signs. The smaller package of cardstock seem perfect. I will find a use for them as well.

This is my first blog! (Yipppppee) I'm so excited. I love teaching and using the Internet, so I don't know why I haven't done this before. I became interested during my hunts for ideas over the years, and so I finally decided to get my feet wet. I owe a lot to Kristen from Ladybugsteachingfiles, she is amazing. Thank you Kristen and so many others!

So my first blog of course will be about my back to school findings. I teach 5th grade in NYC, so I am pacing myself wisely this summer; however I cant stop my teaching brain train from rolling. I went to Target today and found some great things in the $1.00 section. My color scheme this year is Neon - blue, purple, green, and pink. My labels flipped back circles with white writing- courtesy of Kristen.
In the photo there are those lovely pocket charts that I WILL use this year (2), paper, duct tape, small bins that I will use for my smaller manipluatives maybe, and a cute Star Student seat cover. I will hang it. I have fifth graders! I found great things minus McKenzie my daughter teddy bear.
OK, I sort of buy a lot just in case. My students are FORVER losing their belonging as you are mostly likely familiar with as well. So, some lucky boy or girl will receive one of the two. (Upside down- pardon me)
I purchased these bins from Target too, but not recently. I pulled them out from my daughter's birthday party decorations. They were used to contain the utensils for her 3rd birthday party - the theme was Happy Feet 2. I am going to repurpose them for new pencil holders. I bought some cool purple duct tape today to cover them.

My Lovely BFF in MD, found these for me at her local Dollar Tree. I am not fortunate to have such a great discount store so close to me. I do have DEAL$, Family Dollar, and others, so hopefully I find something there this weekend.
